Matagots are cat-like humanoids living in the deepest parts of the northwestern forests of Oros. They look like anthropomorphic and oversized black cats.
Long ago, the matagot tribes exerted total control of the forests and surrounding areas. Savage by nature, they ruled with an iron fist, and shared their power with no other races.
That was before the advent of Man. When the kingdoms of men formed in Enir Daru, they conquered most of the lands around the forests. The matagots retreated deep into the forest. Cut off from the rest of the world, the matagots became quickly fearful of the land-hungry men. Before they could lose any more ground, they struck a deal with the Kingdoms: every year, they would sell off a small percentage of their population into slavery in exchange for the right to retain their land.
Today, matagots are generally viewed as a coward, xenophobic race. Although matagot hunter-warriors are still very dangerous, they are few and far between. Matagots view themselves as tragic victims of history. They consider themselves to be the guardians of all things natural.

Age: Matagots are rather short-lived. They reach maturity at the age of 7, and they rarely live past their 35th birthday.
Languages spoken: Common and Matagot (variant of Elvish; speakers of Elvish can attempt to understand a Matagot sentence with an Intelligence check).
Alignment: They tend toward chaotic alignments.
Size: Between 3 and 4 feet tall (Small).
Speed: 30 feet.
Darkvision: As night-time forets hunters, Matagots can see in the dark with ease.
Fey Ancestry: You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Multiple Lives: Matagots make up for their short lives through the ability for conscious reincarnation. When a matagot dies, there is a chance that he or she can be reborn into a new matagot, and all the memories of the previous life are transferred to the new one. The first reincarnation is a DC 15 Charisma or Wisdom (whichever is higher) ability check performed at the moment of death. The second reincarnation is DC 20, the third is DC 25, etc.
These matagots are raised in the midst of Matagot society, deep in the northwestern forests of Oros. They usually become hunters or shamans. They generally distrust all other races, and are downright hateful of all men.

These matagots were given away as slaves to the realms of man at a very young age. If this is their first life, they have little, if at all, memories of their forest homeland. The treatment of slave matagots vary wildly depending on the identity of their masters. Some have a relatively free reign within the compound of their master’s house. Others are shackled at all times, and are regularly beaten and rarely fed. Slave matagots are rarely exchanged or traded away; they serve the same family for their entire life. Most of them are house servants; they rarely work in the fields.
